| Rebels roar past Tipp - Sunday, May 30, 2010
|
Cork announced their return as a genuine force with this 3-15 to 0-14 demolition of Tipp at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Dennis Walsh's charges were magnificent all over the field throughout, producing a model team display. Holders Tipp were completely outplayed from start to finish and managed just one score from play in the second half.
A brace of Pat Horgan goals - one from a penalty - had Cork ahead by 2-5 to 0-9 at the break, with Aisake O hAilpin (who got the third major after the break) causing all manner of problems in the Tipp defence.
The teams lined out as selected and Tipp led by 0-2 to no score after eight minutes thanks to Lar Corbett and Eoin Kelly (65). In between, Brendan Cummins had plucked a Ben O'Connor shot to safety from above the crossbar but there was nothing the big shotstopper could do to prevent the Newtownshandrum clubman from pointing in the eighth minute.
Within 60 seconds, Seamus Callanan had executed an excellent catch and finish on the turn to restore the two-point cushion. Cummins denied Aisake O hAilpin a goal and Tipp were penalised for an illegal handpass as Ben O'Connor tapped over a free in the twelfth minute.
There was controversy in the 13th minute when O hAilpin caught the sliothar on the edge of the square and eventually booted it to the net. But the referee had whistled for a foul by Pauric Maher and a penalty was awarded. Fortunately for the Rebels, Pat Horgan blasted the penalty to the net.
Ben O'Connor followed up with another pointed free after another Maher foul on the towering Cork No.14. Corbett eluded Shane O'Neill on 19 minutes to stab over his second point and another Kelly free had the gap down to the minimum by the 21st minute, 0-5 to 1-3.
O hAilpin was wreaking havoc in the Tipp defence and he created a second Horgan goal in the 23rd minute, again pulling the ball out of the clouds to cause sheer consternation. When Aisake went to ground hopefully the leather spilled to the No.15 who gratefully despatched his shot to the roof of the net.
John Gardiner increased the gap with an excellent free before John O'Brien replied with a fantastic solo score for Tipp: 0-6 to 2-4 Three Tipp men pounced on O hAilpin next time he caught the ball but the ref's decision was a throw ball rather than a free. Already, Liam Sheedy had been forced to reshuffle his defence in order to try to cope with the considerable aerial threat.
Kelly (free) and O'Brien pulled back two more Tipp points and the former was perhaps fortunate to escape with a yellow card for a clumsy high 'tackle'. Midfielders Cathal Naughton and Brendan Maher traded points at the end of a hard-fought opening period.
Another Kelly free reduced the gap to the minimum but Aisake burst through the Tipp defence to make it 2-6 to 0-10 before Niall McCarthy added a seventh Rebel point in the 41st minute. McCarthy's second point in as many minutes - after strong play by Sean Og O hAilpin - made it a four-point game and Cummins denied Naughton from close range before Gardiner obliged from the 65.
Tipp were being run ragged at this stage and Aisake almost got in for a goal before Ben O'Connor calmly clipped over a point from the right wing to make it 2-10 to 0-10. But a brace of Kelly frees brought his tally to 0-6 and reduced the margin to a more-manageable four points with 20 minutes to play.
Ben O'Connor (free) and Horgan replied for the rejuvenated Rebels and Aisake was unlucky when he drilled a groundshot inches outside the post. Horan added another point in the 59th minute to make it a seven-point game, 2-13 to 0-12.
Just short of the hour, Aisake O hAilpin finally got the goal his commanding performance merited when he gather the ball from Jerry O'Connor to round Cummins and put ten points between the teams.
At the other end, Donal Og Cusack made a stunning save to thwart Kelly, who stroked over the 65 that accumulated. Substitute Timmy Hammersley pulled back another consolation but Naughton arced over a point for the Leesiders at the end of a searing run and substitute Paudie O'Sullivan bagged a 15th point for the winners, who go on to meet Limerick in this year's Munster semi-final
