Kingdom down Rebels AET - Sunday, June 13, 2010
Kerry beat Cork by 1-15 to 1-14 after extra time in a thriller enjoyed by 26,486 spectators at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The composed winners went ahead for the first time six minutes into extra time and never looked back.

Marc O Se popped over a Kerry point two minutes into injury time to force extra time on a scoreline of 1-11 apiece. Cork had led for most of the match but faded in the fourth quarter before Ciaran Sheehan's 69th-minute effort seemed to have handed them victory. But the character of the All-Ireland champions shone through in the end.

Daniel Goulding's 15th-minute goal had Cork ahead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the end of a high-octane first half.

Man of the Match Colm Cooper sent an early free wide after he had gone to ground easily before Daniel Goulding opened the scoring with a fourth-minute free from the ground from an awkward angle. The Rebels won another free a couple of minutes later when Tom O'Sullivan pulled Goulding down and this time Donncha O'Connor slotted over into the breeze to make it 0-2 to no score.

In the ninth minute, Bryan Sheehan dropped a Kerry free over the bar after a Noel O'Leary foul but there was no such luck for David Moran - named at midfield - as he hit a bad wide from play. O'Connor missed a Cork free as both sides struggled to get going.

Kingdom 'keeper Brendan Kealy looked decidedly dodgy under the first high ball to come his way and he was caught out when Goulding dispossessed him and tapped a groundshot to the net in the 15th minute. Suddenly, there was daylight between the teams with the Leesiders leading by 1-2 to 0-1.

Seamus Scanlon had a wide before Cooper (free) and Kieran Donaghy halved the gap with a couple of beautiful Kerry scores. Sheehan dragged a free wide on the 20-minute mark. Playing into the strong wind, Goulding then drilled a 45 over the bar after O'Sullivan had done well to deflect his snapshop outside the post.

Paul Kerrigan had a Cork wide when he probably should have scored. Just short of the 25-minute mark, O'Connor got the best point of the match so far when he accelerated through the Kerry rearguard to take his score with suitable aplomb. A wonder point and the gap was now four: 1-4 to 0-3.

Within 60 seconds, Michael Shields took the cue as he followed up with another stunning Cork point, this one a spectacular strike from distance. Declan O'Sullivan pulled back a Kerry point and Jack O'Connor moved to spring Footballer of the Year Paul Galvin from the bench with 27 minutes played.

Conor Counihan had moved even quicker to introduce Derek Kavanagh at midfield in place of Aidan Walsh. Kavanagh went into Pat McEnaney's notebook for an off-the-ball foul on Cooper, while Graham Canty did likewise for tangling with Galvin.

Rebel full forward Ciaran Sheehan found himself in a one-on-one with Kealy in the 31st minute but his blistering shot flew inches over the bar for a point when a goal was definitely on. Sheehan replied with a superb Kerry minor from play.

It was Cork's turn to have a lucky escape in the 34th minute when Cooper sidefooted a shot wide from in front of the posts. Donaghy had made an excellent catch to set The Gooch up and a goal looked inevitable, but even the greatest players miss the odd one…

The half-time whistle sounded with four points between the teams.

Kerry scored a majestic goal in the second minute of the second half: Donnacha Walsh picked out Cooper with a lovely pass and the Kerry No.13 found Donaghy with a precise first-time fist pass. The 2006 Footballer of the Year kept his cool to slot a super shot low past Alan Quirke to the back of the net: 1-5 to 1-6.

Donncha O'Connor arrowed a Cork free between the posts and followed up with an exquisite finish from play off the outside of his left boot. Kerry were then wrongly awarded a 45 when Donaghy clearly kicked the ball out over the endline and Sheehan stroked the resultant kick over the bar. How vital that score would prove when the final whistle sounded!

Paddy Kelly banged over an excellent Rebel point after Goulding had punched a speculative effort wide and Declan O'Sullivan reduced it to a two-point game after some good play from Cooper.

Goulding and Kerrigan both spurned Cork chances but the trusty No.13 made it 1-10 to 1-7 from a relatively simple free 20 minutes from time after Tommy Griffin was penalised for overcarrying.

Cooper tapped over another Kerry free with 14 minutes left and The Gooch won and converted a free to leave just a point in it with nine minutes remaining.

The Rebels were reduced to 14 men five minutes from the end when their captain Canty was adjudged to have tripped Cooper as he sprinted through on goal and the Kerry talisman picked himself up to tap the resultant free between the posts from point-blank range: 1-10 each.

Sheehan contributed the lead point on 69 minutes, slotting over his shoulder after latching onto Donncha O'Connor's free. There was a hint of a square ball about that score but it mattered not as Marc O Se provided the leveller with an excellent point in the second minute of added time. That score meant 1-11 apiece and extra time.

The Rebels were back to the full complement as John Miskella came in at the start of extra time and Macroom's Fintan Goold edged Cork back in front three minutes after the restart. Another replacement - Kevin McMahon - supplied the hosts' ninth wide. After Cooper was fouled by Ray Carey, he knocked over his fifth point six minutes into extra time.

Within seconds, Barry John Keane made it 1-13 to 1-12 to the Kingdom, who now led for the first time. McMahon was again off target for the tiring Corkmen. In the tenth minute of the first additional period, Keane took his second point after good assist work from Donaghy.

At half time in extra time, Kerry led by 1-14 to 1-12.

A couple of Cork attacks came to nothing and Cooper hit a post at the other end before Noel O'Leary, who had returned from the bench, stole forward to close the gap to one point with five minutes left. Cooper clipped over a right-footed free in the 89th minute and John Hayes pulled back a free at the end of extra time. There would be 60 seconds of injury time…

Kerry held on for a famous win.
