| Wexford targetting Tompkins for top job - Tuesday, November 01, 2005
|
Larry Tompkins is the latest name to be linked with the vacant Wexford football post.
Tompkins, on duty in Australia as a selector with the International Rules team, arrives home tomorrow and is expected to talk with Wexford officials later in the week.
Wexford chairman Sean Quirke wouldn't reveal the identity of those in the running for the post, but said there would be a further meeting with another potential candidate later in the week.
"We'll then have a Management Committee meeting to assess everyone we have spoken to and take it from there," he said.
"I don't want to put a timeframe on it because I've done that too often already," added Quirke.
FRUSTRATION
The failure to fill the position vacated by Pat Roe has led to frustration, with team captain John Hudson fearing that the delay could be a setback after all the hard work of the last two years under Pat Roe.
Hudson expected the vacancy to be filled quickly with a number of high-profile candidates in contention, but in the last three weeks the trail has gone cold and Wexford officials are now pondering the possible recruitment of Tompkins.
Only last week in Australia, Tompkins said he would like to return to inter-county management at some stage in the future.
He spent seven years in charge of the Cork football team, a period that yielded two Munster titles and an All-Ireland final appearance in an era of considerable Kerry dominance.
Wexford's failure to find a candidate up to now has as much to do with its geography as anything else.
With no desire to choose a new manager from within the county, Board officers have thrown their net far and wide.
Tompkins, who is based in Cork city, is more than a two hour drive away from Wexford.
Former Limerick manager Liam Kearns was among the first to be approached, while Kildare's Padraig Nolan also received contact, as has former Louth manager Paddy Carr and former Dublin star Charlie Redmond who has yet to manage an inter-county team.
But the feeling is that Wexford were prepared to wait on Tompkins to return home from Australia before talking to him.
CONFIDENT
Wexford are one of three counties that have yet to choose a football manager. Louth are still going through the process, but Roscommon are confident that they will have a man in place this week, with former Offaly boss Paul O'Kelly the favourite locally despite the entrance of John Maughan into the race.
